The latest show to go up at Art on A, the gallery run by East Village punk/metal promoters Wendigo Productions, features artwork created by members of NYC hardcore band Yuppicide, who’ve been on the LES scene for some 20+ years. Step inside and you’ll find original flyer sketches for shows at ABC No Rio, tour posters, album covers, and drawings and paintings with names like “Barfing Cat” and “Robot’s Lament” — all created by band members Steve Karp, Joe Keefe and Jesse KFW Jones.
They describe their work as “a tattooed fist shaking at the sky, railing unabashedly at the utter madness and beauty of it all, refusing to go gently into that good night.”
We’re not sure that’s the first thing that came to mind when we saw Keefe’s “Guzzler” in the gallery’s front window. But it definitely upstaged the display window over at the Ricky’s Halloween store.
The green monster, who looks like the Philly Phanatic on crank, is riding a trike that Keefe customized himself, complete with a working barbecue rig on the back…
… and some brass knuckles on the front fender.
The whole thing will cost you the demonic sum of $6,666.66 — take it home so you can be the life of that Halloween party. The show will be at Art on A — at 24 Avenue A, near Houston Street — until the closing party on Oct. 16.
