Thought today was a scorcher? Just be glad you’re not wearing an FDNY uniform. Firefighters were taken to hospitals this morning when blazes broke out on the fringes of Chinatown and in Williamsburg.
The fire at 75-83A Elizabeth St., near Hester Street, started around 8:30 a.m. (the cause has yet to be determined) and lit up the first floor of a building that houses two hair salons and apartments. It was under control by 10:05 a.m., the fire department said.
Five firefighters and a civilian were transported to New York Downtown Hospital with minor injuries; none were admitted and no one was displaced from their homes, according to a spokesperson.
The Williamsburg blaze — which sparked around 4:40 a.m. on the top floor of 188 South 3rd Street, according to DNAinfo — wreaked much more havoc. It took an estimated 140 firefighters to bring it under control at 6:34 a.m., by which time three apartments were destroyed. One firefighter was hospitalized for heat-related injuries.
