Unlike the countless many who come to New York in pursuit of a music career, Bronx native Alynda Lee Segarra left the city, at 17, for New Orleans. Hurray for the Riff Raff is now such a fixture there that they’ve appeared on “Treme.”

After four full-length releases, the band caught the attention of indie folk label ATO Records; their fifth album, Small Town Heroes, drops in February, when they’ll tour with fellow revivalists Shovels & Rope.

Earlier this month, they played Music Hall of Williamsburg (they’ll be back in January for a show at Highline Ballroom) and we met Segarra and fiddle player Yosi Perlstein at New Orleans-affiliated d.b.a. in the East Village. Play the video to watch an interview and a performance of “Blue Ridge Mountain,” their tribute to country music pioneers The Carter Family.
