Eight months after Sutra ended its 10-year run, its replacement is now open. Bar Akuda comes from the owners of 1 Republik, a sports bar with locations in Hoboken and North Arlington, New Jersey. Kenneth Caulfield, who owns the self-described “premier sports bar” with childhood friend Keith McKeon, told us that once his gas service is upgraded the “upscale gastropub” will serve an array of burgers with “a lot of different spices and seasonings from all over the world.”
Caulfield said he was hoping to “capitalize on the burger trend that’s going on at the moment,” and that’s not all: “The area is so gentrified I think we can capitalize on it,” he added.
He also noted that the bar would serve 60 beers: “We’re really trying to work off that, feed on that, eh, how do they call it? You know the… microbrews and…”
Just don’t look for many of those craft beers on draft – Allagash and Goose Island is about as exotic as the taps get. But hey, there are $2 mimosas on Saturdays and Sundays from 11am and 6pm, and other daily specials such as 50-cent wings (minimum order of 10) from 8pm to close on Mondays.
“It’s going to be a good vibe,” Caulfield promised over the thrum of dance music. Or as a New Yorker said of 1 Republik on Yelp: “If you want to get really drunk off $2 mimosas surrounded by a sea of fists pumping into the air, this is your place.”
