New York City has a long, amazing, storied literary scene — the East Village, in particular, has nursed writers like Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, and Bob Holman. New York City also has a long, amazing, different-kind-of-storied history of extensive drinking. It only makes sense to willfully combine these two traditions, and that’s exactly what Lit Crawl NYC has done.

Promising “ghost stories, rotten love, and naughty trivia,” the event is a bibliophile bar crawl through the East Village and Lower East Side, where bars host author readings, trivia and other brain games, and audience discussions, which surely deteriorate as the night progresses. Highlights from this year’s schedule include:

  • At Professor Thom’s NPR Ask Me Another host Ophira Eisenberg will read from her memoir, Screw Everyone: Sleeping My Way to Monogamy, before hosting a round of naughty trivia, courtesy of the game show’s writers
  • Gigantic and Vice‘s Other Voices, Other Rooms panel, at 3 Ten Lounge, wherein writers for the two magazines will discuss overhearing and the overheard, including commute conversations, sidewalk gossip, distressingly loud sex, and other intimate encounters;
  • A reading by three Farrar, Strauss & Giroux authors, Laura Van den Berg, David Grand, and Katherine Faw Morris, at Fontana’s, after which FSG’s house band The Savage Detectives will perform.

There’s a lot more: the complete schedule is available on the Lit Crawl NYC website. The event takes place on Saturday, September 14th, and is free.
