Following the closure of Prima last summer, Mathieu Palombino of beloved Williamsburg-East Village pizzeria Motorino is bringing classic French cuisine to the Bowery with La Gamelle. Named for the popular, long-gone restaurant in Soho, the new La Gamelle was designed with the help of the original’s owner, Alex Gherab, and offers up brasserie staples.
The 110-seater is located in the former home of Bowery Diner, which then became Palombino’s pop-up restaurant, Chez Jef.

An assortment of house-made charcuterie can be ordered to share or as an entrée, including Pâté en Croute, made with rabbit, prunes and pistachio and Cervala Remoulade, smoked sausage with remoulade sauce. Entrees range in price from $18 to $26 and include cod and salmon dishes, spring leaks and ham “au gratin,” Pot au Feu (slow-cooked beef in bouillon with gherkins and horseradish mayo) and, of course, the requisite steak frites with béarnaise.

The drink program features European beers on tap or by the bottle, including a number of Belgium Trappist varieties, and diverse offerings of French and American wines. There’s a selection of house cocktails, like the Rayon de Soleil (cognac, suze, St. Germain, lemon and egg white), and if you’re feeling especially festive there’s a trio of $16 cocktails made with Paul Goerg champagne to splurge on.
La Gamelle is located at 241 Bowery at Stanton Street, and is open daily from 5:00pm – Midnight Sunday through Thursday, and from 5:00pm – 1:00am Friday and Saturday. All major credit cards accepted.
