NYU’s Seventh Street Residence Hall, which was evacuated yesterday in the wake of the explosion just around the corner on Second Avenue, remains closed today, and it’s uncertain when students will be allowed back in. Same goes for a Second Avenue building used by Tisch students, located a block over from where three buildings collapsed during last night’s seven-alarm fire. Here’s the latest update from NYU, which has offered meal vouchers and dry-cleaning service.
We spoke to a couple of evacuated NYU students yesterday. Play the video to hear from Joanie Educate (left) and Minji Kim (right).
Overnight, the University accommodated about a dozen students from the 7th St. residence hall in Palladium Hall and provided them with meal vouchers. Most residents made arrangements on their own.
NYU is in touch with the City about being able to re-open the 7th St. residence hall. We are awaiting official word and will keep you updated on a return. In the meantime, we are addressing urgent student needs, such as gaining temporary access to important academic assignments, medications, etc.
Cleaning crews will begin work as soon as the building is officially accessible, and they will assess what work needs to be done. The University will provide laundry and dry-cleaning service for students to help them address the issue of smoke odor.
111/113 2nd Ave., where the Tisch School of the Arts has dance studio space, will remain closed today. Faculty have been in touch with students about the alternative spaces and changes to class schedules for activities that are normally scheduled in those buildings.
The Barney Building, located at 34 Stuyvesant Street, is open.
In the meantime, we are glad that our community members are safe and well; we are saddened by the injuries and dislocation experienced by our neighbors; and we are grateful for the huge efforts of the FDNY.
If students would like to talk to a counselor 24/7, they may contact the Wellness Exchange at 212-443-9999 or wellness.exchange@nyu.edu. Students may also contact the Wellness Exchange to seek assistance if this event has affected their academic or personal status.
