Overthrow NYC, the gym that took over the Yippie Museum building at 9 Bleecker, is finally up and punching: Joey “The Soho Kid” Goodwin tells us it just hosted its first “Boxing & Booze” class – and there’ll be plenty more boxing and booze to come, as a series of underground matches is in the works.
The “smokers series” kicks of next Friday, Dec. 12, at a location that’ll be announced the week of the party. The website, where you can buy $25 tickets, promises “three epic bouts,” a liquor sponsor, a live band, and DJs. So basically, something similar to the Broome Street party where displaced yippie Dana Beale told us he didn’t think a boxing gym could make it work in his former home.
But Overthrow is definitely making a go of it, complete with a new “Jabby Hoffman” t-shirt that’s described as “a tribute to Abbie Hoffman and Yippies rich past at #9 Bleecker, the future home of OVERTHROW Boxing Club.” The shirt is limited to just 100, otherwise we’d demand royalties for the whole “Jabby Hoffman” thing.
