While we’re on the subject of CBGB, here’s a heads up: Marky Ramone, who replaced the late Tommy Ramone as the band’s drummer in 1978 and went on to play with them for 15 years, will be supporting his forthcoming memoir, Punk Rock Blitzkrieg, with a trio of appearances.
First up, do you wanna dance? On Jan. 17, Marky will once again team with Andrew WK to power through Ramones tunes as they did at Irving Plaza a little over a year ago. General admission to the Gramercy Theatre show is $35 bucks; a $63 VIP ticket gets you a ticket to the bopping, a copy of the book, and access to a meet and greet with the man himself (sorry, they aren’t throwing in a bottle of Marky’s spaghetti sauce or a ride on his meatball truck).
Marky also drummed with the Voidoids on Blank Generation, which makes him the second member of the band — after Richard Hell — to pen an autobiography. And just like we saw a lot of Hell, it looks like we’ll be seeing a hell of a lot of the last Ramone.
The Hudson Union Society (a sort of members-only 92nd Street Y) is also hosting an event with him, on Jan. 14. Members of the club will get a book in return for the $29 admission. Be warned: membership is steep ($200) unless you’re an NYU alum, in which case it’s blessedly free.
And it looks like you’ll be able to virtually bask in the presence of the legend who also drummed for The Misfits, as well — his publisher’s website has him making an online appearance at Barnesandnoble.com on Jan. 7.
Punk Rock Blitzkrieg, out in mid-January, promises to be “an unflinching picture of the dysfunction behind the band that changed a generation,” and comes with endorsements from Anthony Bourdain and Stephen King (who, by the way, is appearing at the Union Square B&N tomorrow).
