Hefner-4-2

Tiny dogs in costume and human-wielded iPhones taking pictures of said tiny dogs were present in equal proportion yesterday at the Dog-E-Dog Howl-O-Ween parade at the McCarren Park Dog Run in Williamsburg.

Inspired by its Manhattan cousin, the Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade, Dog-E-Dog owner Eric Arnstein founded the annual event three years ago as a way to introduce Williamsburg and Greenpoint dog lovers to local pet businesses and charities. The Sunday event featured a raffle, costume and trick (for treat!) contests, and collected money and donations for Barc Shelter.

Bedford + Bow(wow)ery was there to capture the puppy love. Check out the slideshow below.

<strong>Coco</strong>

Coco

With her wig on, Coco, dressed as Blonde-Ambition-era superstar Madonna, stole the spotlight from fellow performer Elvis. Note the tiny microphone next to Coco’s less-than-impressed mug.

<strong>Daisey</strong>

Daisey

Two-month-old Daisey is a tooth fairy. Nothing else to see here.

<strong>Dolce</strong>

Dolce

“She is the Queen of Hearts, and I am her Mad Hatter,” said Ewa Fidel of her eight-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback Dolce. “Actually,” said Fidel, “she’s wearing my costume from last year, minus some tulle. But I think it looks good on her too.”

<strong>Elvis</strong>

Elvis

“The King” seemed content to nestle in owner Lee Merto’s arms to greet his fans. According to Merto, costumes are a daily event for Elvis (who is still called Elvis the other 364 days of the year). Says Merto. “He won’t sleep unless he’s wearing his Giants jersey.”

<strong>Gia</strong>

Gia

Much to the relief of the more gruesome minded parade attendees, this is Gia as an alligator – not Gia being eaten by an alligator. The tiny Jack Russell/Mini Pinscher mix wore the outfit with aplomb. Said owner, David Wong, “She’s such a wiggler – it’s hilarious in the big outfit.”

These fan favorites and dog-run pals had their pick of costumes on Sunday. “I’ve got like 10 more costumes in my backpack,” said Andy Shaw, whose dogs, Thea and Elvis, were dressed as samurai. Shaw collects pieces wherever he goes. “Elvis’s sword is from Build-A-Bear, but the head pieces I brought back from Japan.” On Instagram: @elvisandthea

<strong>Harriet</strong>

Harriet

Snapped minutes before her costume contest win, 10-year-old Basset Mix Harriet was perfectly content in her Cat, er, Dogepillar Forklift get-up. Owner Chris Parow made the costume himself from cardboard and duct tape. “I looked on Google for ‘Dog Forklift’ and found nothing. No one had ever made one. This is the first ever.”

<strong>Hefner</strong>

Hefner

Hefner donned his namesake’s robe and found some playmates for the Sunday parade. “The name seemed appropriate,” said owner Denise Herman, “He’s very charming, with just a little bit of humping.”

<strong>Igby</strong>

Igby

Alison Grasso and her poodle/English Toy Spaniel mix pup Igby are into team costumes. This year they appeared as Ronald McDonald (Igby) and Wendy (Alison). Said Grasso, “Last year we went as Spring Breakers. She was James Franco.”

<strong>Isabelle</strong>

Isabelle

“Isabelle snores and eats like a piglet,” said Debra Cassidy of the 3.5 month-old French Bulldog/Boston mix. Shortly after her photo, Isabelle was spotted living up to the costume as she took an afternoon snooze in Cassidy’s arms. On Instagram: #isabellegreenpoint

<strong>Jaws</strong>

Jaws

Seen here in the only successful group photo taken, Chug (styled as Jaws) and Squid (styled as "The Boat") were another puppy duo. Squid’s owner, Debby, a set designer, sewed the (surprisingly secure) fishing vessel onto a puppy sweatshirt. It was holding up so well that Chug’s owner Heather was already planning for next year. “So far the plan is Forrest Gump and the shrimp boat.” Plan accordingly, everyone else.

<strong>Jockamo</strong>

Jockamo

Part costume, part brilliant marketing strategy, 2.5-year-old Jockamo is styled as a North Atlantic Grey Whale. What is a #whalestapler? Owner Ari Glogower is glad you asked. He ran a successful Kickstarter and now sells them when he isn’t teaching at NYU Law. Says Glogower, “A box is also a very comfortable costume for a dog.” True.

<strong>Punk</strong>

Punk

Punk Rockers Lady (in purple) and Hank (in blue) are Dog-E-Dog owner Eric Arnstein’s pups, and as such were only unofficially entered in the costume contest. The costumes were styled out of cut-up black jeans and sweatshirts – and with pins sourced for the occasion. On Hank: “It’s better to be pissed off than pissed on.”

<STRONG>Scout</strong>

Scout

Described approvingly by the judges as “very meta,” Scout was dressed as “a family outing.” With him in the canoe are owners Jessie Levison and Alex Trendelman. The canoe was made out of papier-mâché by BigFunStore artist and family friend Beth Salvini.
