Just a week before the anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, a beloved Breezy Point restaurant that was hit hard by the storm has announced its comeback. Kennedy’s sent out word to patrons today that it will relaunch dinner service next Wednesday, October 29 — exactly two years to the day the superstorm put the restaurant out of commission and ravaged the bungalow community around it.
While Kennedy’s, which lies deep in the Breezy enclave, isn’t as celebrated by Down For the Dayers as, say, Rockaway Taco, its beachfront building predates the taco shack by about a century. According to the restaurant’s old website, the structure was transplanted from a Coney Island racetrack by a gent named Maxwell Kennedy. In 1910, it was known first as Kennedy’s Pavilion, then it was called Kennedy’s Casino and the Breezy Point Hotel.

The building was completely overhauled following Sandy, and got a new space for private parties. By the looks of the photos here, it remains a classic place to sip a perfect martini while loading up on carbs. We can’t wait to watch another glorious sunset from the glass-enclosed annex while hoping no one notices our bathing suit soaking the seat.
