Nearly a year after Mission Chinese Food shuttered at the height of its popularity, owner Danny Bowien has announced a comeback.
Mission Chinese’s Instagram just posted a photo of Bowien and executive chef Angela Dimayuga outside of an unidentified restaurant, with the caption “Danny and chef angela @swimsuit_issue outside of the new MCF New York!”
The curtains and front door are clearly those of Rosette, the East Broadway restaurant that — it so happens — closes tonight, per an invitation to its send-off.
Bowien wasn’t immediately available to confirm the location (we’ve left a message) and Ron Castellano, owner or Rosette, said he couldn’t talk about the new operator at 171 East Broadway (an address that will eventually be neighbors with Pies ‘n’ Thighs, the cocktail spot at 1 Ludlow and the hotel Castellano, along with Taavo Somer of Freemans, is bringing to the old Jarmulowsky bank building).
“My partner is having health problems and he just needed immediate income,” Castellano said of Rosette’s closure after just eight months. “We got an offer for the space as his problems were unfolding. Just couldn’t pass on it. Really wasn’t the plan to sell the entire place.”
Rosette’s website says it looks forward to reopening soon and Castellano says he’s scouting new locations — possibly in Detroit. Hey, why not? Mission Chinese came from San Francisco, after all…
