Tonight, Brooklyn folk rocker Anthony D’Amato releases his debut studio album, The Shipwreck from the Shore (New West Records) by playing the whole thing live at Mercury Lounge. (Added bonus: his 7:30 p.m. set will be preceded by John Gallagher, Jr., star of HBO’s The Newsroom.)
D’Amato, a former publicist for boutique PR firm Shore Fire Media, studied with Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Paul Muldoon at Princeton, and follows in his mentor’s footsteps by telling stories with a series of images rather than relying on a narrative arc.
His album was recorded at the Great North Sound Society, an old farmhouse in Maine converted into a recording studio by Sam Kassirer, a member of Josh Ritter’s band. And several other notable artists appear on it: Brad Cook (Megafaun), Matt McCaughan (Bon Iver) and Gabriel Gordon (Natalie Merchant).
We caught up with D’Amato and his friend Katy Pinke at the Museum at Eldridge Street for a live rendition of “Ludlow,” written while the singer-songwriter was living on the Lower East Side.
Correction: The original version of this post was revised because it misidentified Paul Muldoon as a Nobel rather than a Pulitzer winner.
