If you heard helicopters over the East Village last night, here’s why.

An 18-year-old man was fighting for his life after being shot in the face outside of the Jacob Riis Houses, the police said.

The shooting happened around 10:45 p.m. outside of 118 Avenue D, near East 8th Street. The victim was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition.

The gunman is still at large, according to the police.

Update: The victim, Deontay Moore, has been pronounced dead, according to NBC New York. That outlet also reports that gunfire erupted on Knickerbocker Avenue and Menahan Street in Bushwick, sending five people to the hospital this afternoon.

Update #2: The Daily News has more on the circumstances of the East Village shooting: “The teen, Deontay Moore, was with a group of friends outside the Ave. D building in the Jacob Riis Houses when one of two suspects on bicycles squeezed off several shots from a nearby courtyard, witnesses said.”
